Marburg

Marburg is about 90 km north of Frankfurt in Hesse, reached in roughly an hour by direct RE30/RE98 regional express train, or about an hour by car via the A5 and A490. An early or mid-morning arrival gives time to work up through the town before the afternoon light fades on the castle hill. From Marburg Hauptbahnhof, the day usually begins in the Oberstadt, the steep old town of half-timbered houses stacked along narrow, winding lanes, climbing gradually toward the Landgrave's Castle (Landgrafenschloss) that overlooks the Lahn valley from above the university. The castle courtyard and viewing terrace are the highlight of the morning, with the descent taking in St. Elizabeth's Church, one of Germany's earliest Gothic buildings, built to house the tomb of Elizabeth of Hungary. The afternoon suits a walk along the Lahn riverbank or a coffee stop in one of the student cafés near the market square, since Marburg's university population keeps the old town lively outside peak tourist season. Food options range from traditional Hessian taverns serving Ahle Wurst and Handkäse near the Markt to riverside cafés along the Lahn. The town is walkable year-round, but late spring is most comfortable given the steep, sometimes uneven cobblestone lanes leading up to the castle, which can be slick with ice or wet leaves in winter and autumn.
