Limburg an der Lahn

Limburg an der Lahn is about 70 km west of Frankfurt in Hesse, reached in around 25 minutes by ICE to Limburg Süd, or about an hour by direct regional train to Limburg Bahnhof. Because the cathedral quarter sits within walking distance of either station, a mid-morning arrival still leaves the whole day. From the cathedral platform, the descent into the well-preserved half-timbered old town leads through narrow lanes lined with 14th- and 15th-century houses, opening onto small squares suited to a mid-morning coffee stop. The afternoon suits a walk along the Lahn riverbanks, where the cathedral's silhouette is best photographed from the opposite bank, or a stop at the Historisches Rathaus (historic town hall) at the Fischmarkt. Food options range from riverside cafés to half-timbered inns near the Fischmarkt serving regional Hessian dishes. The town is compact enough to visit in any season, but spring and autumn offer the clearest light for photographing the cathedral from across the river, while summer's foliage can partially obscure the view.
