Saalburg Roman Fort

The Saalburg Roman Fort sits about 25 km north of Frankfurt near Bad Homburg in Hesse, reached in around 40 minutes by S5 S-Bahn to Bad Homburg followed by bus 5 to the fort, or about 30 minutes by car via the A661 and B456. A morning departure works well, since the open-air fort areas are best seen without the midday heat in summer. The Saalburg is a fully reconstructed Roman auxiliary fort on the Limes frontier, the fortified boundary that once marked the edge of the Roman Empire in Germany, and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. The morning suits walking through the rebuilt main gate, along the reconstructed timber and stone ramparts, and through the barracks buildings furnished to show Roman garrison life. The small on-site museum displays frontier-era finds including weapons, tools, and everyday objects excavated from the surrounding Limes sites, best visited before or after the outdoor walk depending on weather. The afternoon can be spent walking a short stretch of the wooded Limes trail beyond the fort itself, which follows the line of the original Roman boundary through the Taunus forest. Food and rest stops include a small café within the fort grounds serving simple meals. Spring through autumn is the best season, since the open-air walking areas and reconstructed buildings are most comfortable to explore without winter cold or mud along the surrounding trail.
