Kassel and the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe

Kassel sits about 190 km north of Frankfurt in Hesse, reached in about 1h 35min by direct ICE to Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe, or roughly 2h 30min by regional train with a change. Because the round trip on the ICE already takes up part of the day, an early morning departure is worth planning for. From Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe station, tram 1 or 4 leads to the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, a UNESCO World Heritage hillside park and Europe's largest, which climbs through wooded slopes to the Hercules monument at its summit. On scheduled days between May and September, the park's cascading water features are switched on in the early afternoon, sending water down the stepped cascades to the octagon base of the Hercules statue, so timing the visit around the schedule is worth checking before departure. The morning is well suited to the climb up through the park's grottoes and cascades, with the afternoon left for Wilhelmshöhe Palace's Old Masters picture gallery at the foot of the hill, or a walk into central Kassel to see the contemporary art connected to the documenta exhibition, held every five years but referenced year-round in the Fridericianum and Museum Wilhelmshöhe. Food stops include the palace park's café near the lower cascades and traditional Hessian restaurants in the city center. May through September is the best window, both for the water displays and for comfortable walking through the park's forested paths.
