Affolderner See, Bad Wildungen

Affolderner See is a smaller balancing reservoir on the Eder river, just downstream of the much larger Edersee, in the Waldeck district near Bad Wildungen in northern Hesse. Its beach at Affoldern is sandy with a shallow, gradual slope, and because the lake is smaller and shallower than the Edersee it warms considerably faster in spring and holds its heat longer into early autumn, a point locals often mention when comparing the two. The shoreline is an open, gently curved bay with little wind exposure, kept calm by the surrounding low hills, and there is no boat traffic of the scale seen on the main reservoir, which keeps the water quieter for swimmers. The atmosphere is unmistakably family-oriented: a playground sits just behind the beach, and the shallow water close to shore makes it a favoured spot for parents with young children rather than a destination for serious watersports. Amenities include changing rooms, a kiosk, and the playground, though there is no lifeguard on duty and no dedicated rental of sun loungers, so towels go directly on the sand or grass verge. The reservoir's water level is more stable than the Edersee's because it functions as a balancing basin rather than the main storage lake, so the beach width changes less dramatically across the season. Access is by regional train to Bad Wildungen followed by a local bus or short taxi ride to Affoldern, or by car with parking near the lido; there is no direct rail stop in the village itself.
