Mainufer, Frankfurt am Main

Mainufer refers to the grass banks of the River Main running through central Frankfurt, in Hesse, rather than a sand or pebble beach. The riverbank here is grass and paved promenade, with no beach entry into the water at all; the Main is a working river carrying regular shipping traffic, and swimming is neither official nor advisable along this stretch. The riverbanks are broad and open on both sides, running for several kilometres past landmarks such as the Städel museum and the Eiserner Steg footbridge, with no meaningful shelter from wind beyond the city buildings and bridges. The atmosphere is a mix of sunbathers, picnicking groups, joggers, and cyclists rather than a swimming crowd, particularly on the Sachsenhausen side near Schweizer Platz, where the lawns fill on warm afternoons and evenings. Amenities come from the surrounding city rather than the riverbank itself: cafés and bars line the streets just back from the water, and a continuous cycling and jogging path runs along both banks. Because the appeal is the promenade and its skyline views rather than bathing, visitors looking for an actual swim should head instead to one of the region's supervised lakes, such as Langener Waldsee or Grosser Woog in Darmstadt, both reachable from central Frankfurt by train. Access to the Mainufer itself is straightforward: U-Bahn or tram to Schweizer Platz or Willy-Brandt-Platz, then a short walk to the riverbank on either side.
