Cycling the Lahntalradweg

The Lahntalradweg follows the Lahn river valley for 245km from its source in the Rothaargebirge to the Rhine, with the Hesse sections between Marburg, Weilburg, and Limburg an der Lahn running through half-timbered old towns, castle hilltops, and riverside meadows on mostly flat, well-signed paths. The route is self-guided and suits cyclists of most fitness levels, since gradients along the river are gentle; families with older children and casual riders can manage day sections, while touring cyclists complete the full route over several days. No special skill is required beyond basic cycling ability and road awareness at the occasional points where the path crosses village streets. A bicycle, whether privately owned or hired, is the only equipment needed; bike hire is available at Marburg and Weilburg train stations, including standard and, at some outlets, e-bikes for less strenuous riding. Cyclists should wear a helmet, though it is not legally required for adults in Germany, and bring layered clothing and rain protection, since the route runs through open countryside with limited shelter. There is no formal safety briefing, as this is an unguided route, though the path is clearly waymarked with the Lahntalradweg's signage throughout Hesse and mostly separated from road traffic. The route can be ridden year-round, though it is best from April to October; the busiest and most reliably dry conditions fall from May to September, while winter riding can involve muddy or icy sections on unpaved stretches near the river. Rail connections along the Lahn valley, including Deutsche Bahn regional trains that carry bicycles, make it possible to ride one-way sections and return by train.
