Strandbad Senftenberger See, Senftenberg

Senftenberger See is an artificial lake in Brandenburg's Lausitz region, created by flooding a former open-cast lignite mine, and today it is one of the state's largest and most developed inland beach destinations. The main Strandbad has a long, wide sandy shoreline, considerably more generous than most of Brandenburg's natural lake beaches, with a gently sloping lakebed suited to families. Because the lake is relatively shallow in its swimming zones and sits in one of Brandenburg's sunnier southern districts, water temperatures often reach 19-24°C in high summer, among the warmest of the state's lakes. The site has been developed with tourism in mind since the mine's closure, and facilities reflect that: changing rooms, showers, several restaurants, a watersports centre offering windsurfing and sailing equipment, and a marina for larger boats. The atmosphere is lively and family-oriented, drawing visitors from across the Lausitz region and beyond, including day-trippers combining a beach visit with the area's other reclaimed mining lakes. A small artificial ski and toboggan slope near the lake operates in winter, making the site a rare year-round leisure destination. Reaching Senftenberg from Berlin takes about an hour and thirty minutes by regional train, followed by a local bus or a twenty-minute walk to the lake shore.
