Kloster Maulbronn (Maulbronn Monastery)

Kloster Maulbronn, in the town of Maulbronn in Baden-Württemberg, was founded by Cistercian monks in 1147 and is recognised by UNESCO as the most complete surviving medieval monastery complex north of the Alps. The core church, built between 1147 and 1178, is one of the earliest examples of Gothic architecture in Germany, marking the transition from Romanesque round arches to Gothic pointed vaulting within a single structure. The complex preserves its cloister, chapter house, refectories for monks and lay brothers, mill buildings, and a fortified perimeter wall largely intact, giving visitors a rare view of the full working layout of a medieval monastic economy rather than isolated ruins. After the Reformation, the monastery was converted into a Protestant seminary in 1556, and the site later educated notable students including the astronomer Johannes Kepler and the writer Hermann Hesse, whose novel 'Beneath the Wheel' draws on his time there. Interpretation follows the monastery's floor plan room by room, moving from the church through the cloister to the domestic and working buildings, allowing visitors to trace both religious life and monastic labour. Restoration work carried out through the 20th and early 21st centuries has focused on structural conservation of the original stonework and timber roof trusses, and the complex remains in active use as a Protestant seminary and school alongside its museum function, giving it continuous occupation since the 12th century.
