Hohenzollern Castle

Hohenzollern Castle sits atop an isolated 855-metre peak near Bisingen in Baden-Württemberg and is the ancestral seat of the House of Hohenzollern, whose members ruled as electors of Brandenburg, kings of Prussia, and German emperors. The first fortress on the site dates to around 1000 and was destroyed in 1423 after a siege by neighbouring imperial cities; a second, larger fortress built in the 1450s survived until it fell into disrepair by the 18th century. The present castle was commissioned by King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia and built between 1850 and 1867 in the Gothic Revival style, designed by architect Friedrich August Stüler as a monument to Hohenzollern family history rather than a defensive structure. The interior preserves the Blue Salon, the King's Chamber, and Treasury exhibits including the Prussian royal crown and personal effects of Frederick the Great. The castle's turreted silhouette and battlements are decorative rather than functional, reflecting 19th-century Romantic ideas about medieval chivalry rather than genuine medieval military architecture. Interpretation follows a room-by-room route through the family's history, from the medieval fortresses' remains in the foundations to the 19th-century state rooms. Restoration has been ongoing since the original 19th-century construction, with the exterior stonework and interior furnishings maintained by the Princely House of Hohenzollern, which still owns and manages the property today.
