Heidelberg Castle

Heidelberg Castle stands on the Königstuhl hillside above the Neckar river in Heidelberg, Baden-Württemberg, and traces its origins to the early 13th century, when the Electors Palatine first fortified the site. Successive rulers expanded the complex through the 14th to 17th centuries, adding the Gothic Ruprecht Building, the Renaissance Ottheinrich Building with its ornate facade of sculpted biblical and mythological figures, and the Friedrich Building. The castle's fortunes turned during the Nine Years' War, when French troops under Louis XIV besieged and blew up sections of the fortifications in 1689 and again in 1693; a lightning strike in 1764 further gutted the structure, after which it was never rebuilt as a residence. Today the ruin preserves the Great Vat, an enormous 18th-century wine barrel capable of holding over 220,000 litres, housed in the cellars, along with the German Pharmacy Museum's collection of historic apothecary equipment inside the Ottheinrichsbau. The Elisabeth Gate, built overnight in 1615 as a birthday gift from Elector Friedrich V to his wife, and the castle gardens (Hortus Palatinus), once considered a wonder of European garden design, are also preserved. Interpretation on site is presented chronologically, following the castle's construction and destruction era by era, with information panels in German and English. Restoration since the 19th century has been deliberately conservative, stabilising the ruins rather than reconstructing them, and the castle remains a partial ruin by design, a state UNESCO and regional heritage authorities have maintained as historically significant in itself.
