Reichenau Island Monastic Sites

Reichenau Island, in Lake Constance in Baden-Württemberg, was home to a Benedictine monastery founded in 724 that became one of the most important centres of learning, art, and manuscript production in the Carolingian and Ottonian empires. The island's three surviving churches, St. Mary and Mark's Minster, St. Peter and Paul's Church, and St. George's Church, together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site illustrating the development of religious architecture from the 9th to 11th centuries. St. George's Church in Oberzell preserves a rare and extensive cycle of Ottonian-era wall paintings from around 980, depicting the miracles of Christ, among the best-surviving examples of early medieval monumental painting in Europe. The monastery's scriptorium produced illuminated manuscripts, including gospel books, that were prized across the Carolingian Empire and are now held in collections such as Munich's Bavarian State Library. A dedicated museum on the island, the Museum Reichenau, displays artefacts, manuscript facsimiles, and archaeological finds relating to the monastery's history and the island's continuous agricultural use since the medieval period. Interpretation is organised around the three churches and the museum, tracing the monastery's rise as a centre of Carolingian scholarship through its later decline after the Reformation. Restoration of the wall paintings in St. George's Church has been carried out with careful conservation techniques to stabilise the pigments without overpainting, preserving the original medieval brushwork.
