The David Gareja monastery complex lies in the semi-desert of Kakheti, in south-eastern Georgia, roughly 70 to 90 kilometres from Tbilisi by road, close to the border with Azerbaijan. The landscape is a series of banded, eroded hills in ochre, rust and grey, with cave monasteries cut into the cliffs.

The Udabno ridge, a walk up from the Lavra, offers wide views across the Kakheti plain and over the badlands, with frescoed cave chapels along the ridge and the border visible beyond. The classic frames use the ridge line as a leading line, with the colourful strata below and the monastery buildings as scale. Sunrise and sunset bring low side light that warms the banding and creates long shadows, while midday sun flattens colour and the heat is severe. The best seasons are April to May and September to October, when temperatures are manageable and the hills carry some green in spring. Summer is extremely hot with little shade, and winter can be cold and muddy. The site is quieter than most Georgian sights, though tour groups arrive late morning, and the narrow ridge path can queue at popular viewpoints. Tripods are generally tolerated outdoors, but photography inside the monastery and chapels should be discreet and follow staff guidance; modest dress is expected. Parts of the ridge lie near the border zone with Azerbaijan, so visitors should keep to marked paths, stay on the Georgian side and follow border guard instructions. Drone use is restricted near the border and should be checked with the authorities. Entry to the grounds is generally free. The road from Sagarejo is partly unpaved, so a high-clearance vehicle or local driver is advisable, and visitors should carry at least two litres of water, a hat and sun cream, as basic toilets are available only near the monastery.
