Tbilisi is the capital and largest city of Georgia, a 1,500-year-old city strung along the Mtkvari River between steep hills in the South Caucasus. Its crooked Old Town of carved wooden balconies, sulfur bathhouses, Orthodox churches and hillside fortress sits beside Art Nouveau boulevards, Soviet-era landmarks and a fast-growing café, wine-bar and club scene. Visitors come for Georgian food and natural wine, easy day trips to monasteries and mountains, and some of the lowest prices of any European capital.
Accommodation overview
Tbilisi offers excellent value for a European capital: hostel beds start around GEL 26 (approx $10), design hotels and boutique stays in Sololaki and the Old Town run GEL 157-472 (approx $60-180), and five-star properties on Rustaveli Avenue and Freedom Square cost from about GEL 524 (approx $200). Get the best deals and avoid common mistakes.
Book Tbilisi hotels 3-4 months ahead for May-June and September-October, when weather is best and festivals fill the centre
Rooms in Old Town boutique houses are few (often 13-35 rooms), so Sololaki and Metekhi properties sell out first; reserve those before the larger chains
Rustaveli Avenue hotels sit beside the Liberty Square and Rustaveli metro stations, which makes airport transfers and day trips simpler than staying east of the river
Many Old Town hotels are on steep streets or in old courtyards; confirm lift access and step-free entry when mobility matters
Direct-booking rates on hotel websites are often equal to or lower than online agencies, and chain loyalty members (Marriott Bonvoy, Accor) get member rates at Marriott and Accor properties
Prices are shown in GEL with a USD equivalent at 1 USD = 2.62 GEL; international cards are accepted at all hotels listed, but small hostels may prefer cash in lari
