The Holy Trinity Cathedral of Tbilisi, known as Sameba, crowns Elia Hill in the Avlabari district on the left bank of the Mtkvari River. Consecrated in 2004 after a decade of construction, it is the main cathedral of the Georgian Orthodox Church and one of the largest Orthodox cathedrals in the world, rising to about 100 metres including the cross. The design by architect Archil Mindiashvili follows traditional Georgian church forms, with a cross-in-square plan, a tall central dome and honey-coloured stone cladding, and it draws on elements from medieval churches around the country. The complex includes a separate bell tower, a monastery building and landscaped grounds with fountains and lawns. Inside, visitors find a vast, high interior covered with painted icons and murals, with the main altar beneath the dome and smaller chapels at lower levels, including a crypt-like space beneath the main floor. Photography inside is limited, and dress rules apply: women cover their heads and shoulders and wear long skirts, which are often lent at the entrance, and men remove hats and wear long trousers. Services are held in the morning and evening, and visitors should stay quiet and avoid walking across the nave during the liturgy. The grounds offer wide views of the Old Town, Narikala Fortress and the river valley, and the cathedral glows especially well at dusk when it is lit. Sunday mornings and church holidays, particularly Easter and the feast of the Holy Trinity, bring the largest crowds, with families and pilgrims filling the nave. Weekday mornings are calmer. The cathedral can be reached by metro to Avlabari station and a ten-minute uphill walk, or on foot from Rike Park across the Bridge of Peace in about 15 minutes. A typical visit takes about 45 minutes, including time in the grounds.
