Place Masséna is the main square of Nice, in the Alpes-Maritimes department of France, and connects the Old Town with the modern city centre. It is paved in a black and white checkerboard pattern and surrounded by buildings painted in warm red ochre, in the style of the Sardinian-era architecture of the 19th century.

At its centre stands the Fontaine du Soleil, topped by a statue of Apollo, and tall poles hold sculptures of seated figures that light up at night in changing colours. The square is crossed by tram lines T1 and T2, and it is a gathering place for events such as Carnival. North of the square, the Promenade du Paillon is a long green ribbon of lawns, trees, play areas and fountains that follows the course of the covered Paillon river down to the sea. Its water mirror, a shallow fountain with jets, is a popular place for children to cool off on warm days, and the park has a large playground, shaded benches and quiet corners. Visitors typically spend 45 to 90 minutes walking from the square through the gardens, with stops for coffee or ice cream. Evening brings the best atmosphere, when the square is lit and locals gather, while mornings are quieter for photography and strolling. The area is busiest in summer evenings and during events. It is also a practical hub for the Old Town, the Promenade des Anglais and the shopping streets around Avenue Jean Médecin, all within a few minutes on foot. Entry is free and the area is open at all times, though the gardens are best used in daylight, and visitors should keep an eye on belongings in the crowd.
