Le Lieu Unique — Former LU Biscuit Factory

Le Lieu Unique is a national centre for contemporary creation housed in the former LU biscuit factory in central Nantes, Pays de la Loire, retaining the factory's iconic blue-and-gold tower — a Nantes skyline landmark — as its architectural centrepiece. The LU factory, which produced Petit-Beurre biscuits for over a century, closed its Nantes production in the 1980s; the building was redeveloped and opened as a cultural centre in 2000, becoming one of the leading interdisciplinary arts venues in western France. The programme spans theatre, dance, circus, electronic music, visual art exhibitions, and experimental performance, with a strong focus on emerging artists and cross-disciplinary work that does not fit conventional venue categories. The main performance space occupies the former factory floor and can be configured in multiple formats for different productions. A hammam, bookshop, crêperie, and bar terrace complete the offer, making Le Lieu Unique as much a neighbourhood social space as a cultural institution. The tower, which can be climbed by visitors during opening hours, offers a 360-degree panoramic view over Nantes at a height of around 30 metres. Temporary exhibitions in the ground-floor gallery are often free or low-cost. The bar terrace overlooking the Loire canal becomes one of the most popular outdoor gathering spots in Nantes during summer. Residency programmes bring international artists to work and exhibit in the building for extended periods, and the results frequently appear in the public programme.
