Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nantes

The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nantes is one of the major fine art museums in provincial France, housed in a purpose-built neoclassical building on Rue Georges Clemenceau in the centre of Nantes, Pays de la Loire, and significantly expanded with a contemporary wing completed in 2017. The permanent collection spans seven centuries of European and international art, from medieval altarpieces and Renaissance panel paintings through to the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and is considered particularly strong in seventeenth-century Italian and Dutch masters, nineteenth-century French academic and Romantic painting, and a substantial modern and contemporary section. Significant works include paintings by Georges de La Tour, Ingres, Monet, Kandinsky, and Rubens, as well as a notable collection of works on paper. The 2017 extension added a purpose-built contemporary wing that connects to the original neoclassical building via a glass-roofed atrium providing covered public circulation space. The museum regularly hosts temporary exhibitions of international calibre, drawing on loans from the Louvre, the Centre Pompidou, and major European collections. Thursday evening extended opening to 21:00 makes the museum accessible to visitors who prefer evening cultural visits, and Thursday attendance is noticeably lower than daytime visitor numbers on other days. The museum café operates during standard opening hours, adjacent to the new atrium. Under-18 admission is always free; the first Sunday of each month is free for all visitors. The museum is within walking distance of the central tram network and the Château des Ducs de Bretagne.
