A pilgrim hilltop village with a cathedral and Gallo-Roman ruins.
Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges is a hilltop village in the Pyrenees foothills, about 130 km south-west of Toulouse. Its Cathédrale Sainte-Marie has a Renaissance organ, carved choir stalls and a Romanesque-Gothic cloister, and the nearby Romanesque church of Saint-Just at Valcabrère and the Gallo-Roman ruins of Lugdunum Convenarum add to the visit. The village is a Grand Site of Occitanie and a stop on the Camino de Santiago.
The journey takes about 1h40 by car via the A64. Public transport requires a train to Montréjeau-Gourdan-Polignan and a connection, so a car is far simpler. In summer an international organ festival fills the cathedral.
A suggested day starts with the cathedral and cloister, lunch in the village, then a 2 km walk to Saint-Just and the Gallo-Roman remains, before returning to Toulouse by late afternoon.
