A major Catholic pilgrimage site at the foot of the Pyrenees.
Lourdes is a pilgrimage town in the Hautes-Pyrénées, about 155 km south-west of Toulouse, where the Sanctuaires Notre-Dame de Lourdes receive millions of visitors a year. The sanctuary complex includes the Grotto of Massabielle, the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, the Rosary Basilica and the Basilica of Saint Pius X. Trains from Gare Matabiau take about 2 hours, and the station is about 1 km from the sanctuary.
The medieval Château Fort, now a Pyrenean museum, and the Pic du Jer funicular are nearby. Evening candlelight processions run in season. Entry to the sanctuary is free, but candles and some services are paid.
A one-day trip works with an early train, but there is little time for the mountains, so many visitors stay overnight and continue to Gavarnie or Pic du Midi de Bigorre. The town is busy from April to October, with Lourdes pilgrimages peaking in August.
