Millau Viaduct

The Millau Viaduct is the tallest vehicular bridge in the world — a feat of engineering that has become one of France's most visited modern landmarks since its opening in December 2004. Spanning the Tarn Valley between the plateaux of Causse Rouge and Causse du Larzac near Millau in the Aveyron department of Occitanie, the bridge carries the A75 autoroute over a gap that previously forced all traffic through the centre of Millau, creating chronic congestion on the Paris-to-Barcelona route. The statistics remain staggering: the viaduct stretches 2,460 metres in length; its tallest mast pier reaches 343 metres — taller than the Eiffel Tower — making it the highest traffic deck in the world at 270 metres above the valley floor on its highest span. Designed by architect Norman Foster and engineer Michel Virlogeux, the structure deploys seven hollow concrete piers supporting a steel cable-stayed deck, with each of the eight cable-stayed pylons rising 87 metres above the deck. The engineering is best appreciated not from the A75 itself — where the crossing takes under 90 seconds — but from the Belvédère des Vautours viewpoint on the D992 south of Millau, which positions observers level with the bridge deck and gives a dramatic perspective of the towers disappearing into low cloud on misty mornings. The village of Peyre, carved into the cliff face on the opposite bank of the Tarn, offers a contrasting viewpoint that places the viaduct within the full grandeur of the valley. The official visitor centre near the northern approach toll plaza has an exhibition on the bridge's construction. Allow 90 minutes to two hours to visit both viewpoints and the exhibition.
