Grotte des Demoiselles

Grotte des Demoiselles near Ganges in the Hérault department of Occitanie is one of France's most spectacular show caves — a subterranean world of extraordinary scale whose star feature is a single cavern of cathedral proportions that ranks among the largest accessible cave chambers in the country. Discovered in 1770 and developed for public visits in the 1920s, the cave is reached by a narrow-gauge funicular railway — a unique approach that climbs through the cliffside to the cave entrance at altitude, itself a memorable part of the experience. The 40-minute guided tour descends through a succession of chambers where the density and variety of speleothem formations is remarkable: stalactites hang in crystalline curtains, stalagmites rise in columns up to 15 metres tall, and cave pearls and aragonite flowers glisten in the guided lighting. The culminating space — the Grand Caverne, 52 metres high and 100 metres wide — is overwhelmingly beautiful, its central composition nicknamed 'the Virgin with Child' after the naturally formed stalagmite centrepiece that has accumulated over hundreds of thousands of years. The acoustics in this space are exceptional; occasional concert events use it as a natural auditorium. The funicular to the cave entrance offers views over the Hérault gorge and the village of Saint-Bauzille-de-Putois below. The cave temperature is a constant 14°C throughout the year, making it an excellent destination on hot summer days; warm clothing is nonetheless recommended. Groups are limited in size for each guided tour, and booking ahead in July and August is advisable.
