Cité de l'Espace in Toulouse is France's premier space exploration theme park — a 4-hectare outdoor and indoor science attraction that celebrates Toulouse's status as the capital of European aerospace and home to Airbus headquarters, the European Space Agency's operations, and the CNES (French space agency). Opened in 1997 on the eastern outskirts of Toulouse in Occitanie, the park draws its content directly from real space programmes: the centrepieces are full-scale outdoor replicas of the Ariane 5 rocket (standing 54 metres tall, the same height as the operational launch vehicle), a faithful reconstruction of the MIR space station modules (walkthrough), and a section of the International Space Station habitat. The outdoor launch pad area places visitors directly beneath the Ariane 5 exhaust nozzles at ground level — a perspective that conveys the vehicle's scale with visceral immediacy. Inside, the Planétarium hosts dome film screenings on astronomic subjects; the Imax-format 'Star Theater' shows giant-screen space documentaries. The interactive exhibition halls cover Mars exploration (with a full-scale Mars rover), satellite technology, Earth observation, and the history of human spaceflight in chronological sequences accessible to non-specialist visitors. The park's design mixes outdoor exhibits with indoor climate-controlled galleries and a separate children's play zone featuring rockets and space-themed adventure equipment suitable for ages 4 and upward. A minimum of three hours is required to cover the main exhibits; most families with children spend five to six hours. Tickets must be booked online in advance during school holidays when the park operates at capacity.
