Paragliding from Pic Saint-Loup

Pic Saint-Loup is an isolated limestone peak at 658 metres elevation rising dramatically from the flat Languedoc plain approximately 20 kilometres north of Montpellier in the Hérault department of Occitanie. The cliff on the north face drops in a near-vertical wall of around 400 metres, while the south-facing slopes — where paragliding launches are positioned — benefit from reliable thermal activity driven by solar heating of the surrounding limestone plateau. The combination of consistent thermals, accessible elevation, and proximity to Montpellier has made Pic Saint-Loup one of the most active tandem paragliding sites in southern France. Tandem paragliding requires no prior airborne experience: a certified FFVL (Fédération Française de Vol Libre) instructor handles all stages of the flight — wing inflation, take-off run, navigation, and landing — while the passenger sits in a padded harness seat suspended below the wing. A standard tandem flight from the south-west ridge launch rounds the cliff edge and crosses the north face to capture thermals above the limestone wall before drifting over the surrounding plain. On good thermal days, flights last 20–40 minutes and reach altitudes of 200–300 metres above the summit. The panoramic view encompasses the Gard and Hérault plains to the south, the Mediterranean coast from the Camargue delta to Cap d'Agde on clear days, and the Cévennes mountains to the north, with the Pyrenees visible as a white silhouette on clear winter mornings. Physical requirements apply for safety: minimum weight is typically 45 kg, maximum 110 kg. Pregnant women and individuals with recent spinal injuries or serious cardiac conditions should not fly. All operators at Pic Saint-Loup hold the Brevet de Pilote Biplace FFVL — the French national certification for tandem paragliding instruction — which requires theoretical and practical examinations and a minimum logged flight hours threshold. Liability and accident insurance is included in the flight price by all certified operators. Flights are strictly weather-dependent: operators continuously monitor wind speed and direction and cancel sessions when conditions fall outside safe parameters or when storm risk is forecast. A free-rebooking policy for weather cancellations is standard among reputable operators at the site.
