Normandy Photography Guide 2025

Capture stunning photos with our guide to the best photography spots in Normandy.

Normandy is a historic region in northern France, renowned for its dramatic coastline, medieval architecture, and pivotal role in the D-Day landings of World War II. From the iconic Mont-Saint-Michel abbey to the solemn beaches of the Allied invasion, the region blends natural beauty with profound historical significance. Rolling green countryside, apple orchards, and charming market towns complete the picture of this quintessentially French destination.

Top 10 Photo Spots

The most photogenic locations in Normandy.

1

Étretat Cliffs — Falaise d'Aval at Sunrise

📸 Sunrise (5:30–7:00 in summer); golden hour before sunset

The most photographed spot in Normandy. The Falaise d'Aval arch and detached needle (Aiguille) are best shot at sunrise from the clifftop viewpoint to the west, or from the beach at low tide facing east. Misty morning conditions add dramatic atmosphere. Climb the south cliff (right when facing the sea) for the classic arch framing shot.

2

Mont-Saint-Michel at High Tide / Dusk

📸 High tide at dusk or dawn (check tide tables at mont-saint-michel.net)

The iconic island abbey is photographed from the causeway approach or from the south side viewpoints. The most dramatic images show the island surrounded by water at high tide, with perfect reflections in the flooded bay at dusk or dawn. The approach road viewpoint and La Caserne south-side viewpoints give the classic compositions.

3

Honfleur Vieux-Bassin Harbour Reflections

📸 Early morning (7:00–9:00) before the tourist crowds and when reflections are perfect

The harbour at Honfleur, with its tall slate-fronted houses reflected in the still water of the Vieux-Bassin, is one of the most photographed scenes in France. Still water and ideal reflections occur in the early morning before wind picks up. The quayside cafés and fishing boats add foreground interest.

4

Rouen Cathedral West Facade

📸 Soft morning light (8:00–10:00); evening light show (summer nightly 23:00–01:00)

The Gothic west facade of Rouen Cathedral, painted 30+ times by Monet, changes character completely with different light conditions. Morning light illuminates the facade directly; afternoon rakes across the surface revealing the sculptural depth. The Place de la Cathédrale gives a full frontal view.

5

Normandy American Cemetery at Dawn

📸 Dawn (6:00–8:00 in summer); dusk when golden light warms the white marble

The rows of white marble crosses at the Normandy American Cemetery are profoundly moving at dawn — soft light, quiet, and the sound of the sea below. The cemetery opens at 9:00 but the surrounding area is accessible earlier. Photography is permitted but must be done with respect for the fallen.

6

Abbaye de Jumièges Ruins

📸 Late afternoon (15:00–18:00 in summer) when light enters from the west

The ruined twin towers of Jumièges Abbey rising above the forest are among the most romantic and photogenic ruins in France. Late afternoon light shining through the empty windows and roofless nave is extraordinary. The garden setting adds green foreground interest.

7

Veules-les-Roses Riverside

📸 Late morning when light reaches the village bottom; June for rose bloom

One of Normandy's most photogenic hidden gems. The tiny Veules river flows past thatched cottages, watercress beds, and rose gardens in this small Alabaster Coast village. Intimate, colourful scenes at every turn. Best in June when roses are in bloom.

8

Deauville Beach and Boardwalk

📸 Golden hour in late afternoon when the cabins are lit warm; or overcast for even lighting on the colours

The coloured parasols, wooden boardwalk (Les Planches), and matching beach cabins create graphic, colourful compositions in the French resort tradition. The star name boards on the cabin facades are popular details. Works in all weather — rain creates mirror reflections on the wet boards.

9

Étretat Falaise d'Amont Memorial and View

📸 Late afternoon with warm light on the Falaise d'Aval in the distance

The north cliff (Falaise d'Amont) rises above the Étretat beach and gives a broader perspective than the south cliff, with the Aiguille needle and Falaise d'Aval arch in the distance across the bay. The aviators' memorial (Nungesser and Coli) and the small chapel on the clifftop add compositional interest.

10

Seine Valley from the Côte des Deux Amants

📸 Early morning in autumn and winter when mist fills the valley

The Côte des Deux Amants escarpment rises 120m above the Seine valley east of Rouen and gives a sweeping panorama of the Seine river looping through its valley — one of the finest viewpoints in Normandy. Particularly beautiful in morning mist when the valley fills with fog.
