Chinon Cave Cellar Tour and Cabernet Franc Tasting

Domaine Couly-Dutheil is among the most historically rooted wine estates in the Chinon AOC, with a presence in the town's winemaking landscape stretching back several generations. The estate's cave tour takes visitors into the Grottoes — a network of hand-cut tuffeau limestone tunnels and chambers at the Rue Diderot property — where approximately 800,000 bottles of Chinon AOC wine are aged at a constant ten degrees Celsius, insulated from temperature variation and vibration by several metres of soft white stone. The cave visit lasts approximately 90 minutes and is guided in French and English. Staff explain the history of the tuffeau quarrying tradition that created these chambers as a by-product of building stone extraction, the geological conditions that make Chinon's sub-plateau cellars well suited to long-ageing wines, and the appellation's system of parcel classification. The tasting focuses on Chinon AOC Cabernet Franc, the grape that defines this Centre-Val de Loire appellation. Three wines are poured: a younger terrasse expression from gravel river-terrace parcels, showing fresh red fruit and fine herb character; a tuffeau-slope version with more structure and longer ageing potential; and a prestige cuvée or older vintage to demonstrate what Chinon Cabernet Franc can achieve with time in the bottle. The estate also produces Chinon Rosé and a small quantity of Chinon Blanc from Chenin Blanc; seasonal visitors may encounter these at the tasting table. At €15 per person, the programme represents one of the Loire Valley's most accessible cellar experiences: the price covers the full cave circuit and three tasting pours, with no pressure to purchase. Bottle purchases are available at the cellar door at estate prices, generally below what Tours or Paris retailers charge. The Château de Chinon and the medieval town's Rabelais-era streets are a short uphill walk from the estate, making a combined cultural half-day easy to arrange. Walk-in visits are generally possible outside the July and August peak, when advance booking is recommended.
