Centre-Val de Loire is the garden heart of France, home to the greatest concentration of Renaissance châteaux in the world, two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and a wine tradition spanning six major appellations along the Loire River.

Get more out of every meal.
The Cave Coopérative de Vouvray (38 Route de Véretz, Vouvray) offers the widest tasting range in the appellation — from bone-dry through pétillant to moelleux — for €3–€8/~$3.25–$8.65; no booking required on weekday mornings
Sancerre Blanc is best experienced at the source — the drive from Bourges (85 km) takes under an hour, and small domaines such as Domaine Henri Bourgeois (Chavignol, sancerre.net) welcome walk-in tastings Apr–Oct
Rillettes de Tours must be eaten at room temperature to appreciate the silky texture; take them out of the fridge at least 30 minutes before serving
Tarte Tatin should always be accompanied by crème fraîche (not cream or ice cream) in the Loire — request this at any patisserie or restaurant
Fouées are best eaten fresh from the oven at Les Caves de Marson (Turquant) — the hollow bread deflates within minutes of leaving the oven
