Étangs de la Brenne (Natural Lakes, Indre)

The Étangs de la Brenne form a vast network of shallow lakes scattered across the Brenne Natural Regional Park in the Indre département, Centre-Val de Loire, making it one of France's most important wetland habitats. The designated bathing lake for leisure visitors is the Étang Gabriau, near the village of Rosnay, where a supervised swimming area operates in summer on the lake's northeastern shore. The lake is shallow and warm, with a sandy and pebbly bottom, and its water takes on an amber-green tint characteristic of the Brenne's iron-rich soils. The shoreline at the bathing area is relatively open, with grassy banks and some sandy patches, backed by low woodland and the reedy margins typical of the Brenne landscape. The park encompasses more than 1,200 ponds and lakes, and the scenery around Étang Gabriau feels genuinely wild — there is little development visible in any direction, and the soundscape is dominated by birdsong and wind rather than traffic. The Brenne is one of France's foremost birdwatching destinations, with European white stork, black-necked grebe, purple heron, whiskered tern, marsh harrier, and numerous raptor species recorded regularly around the étangs. Canoeing, cycling on dedicated trails, and guided wildlife-watching tours are all available within the park. Picnic areas are provided at Étang Gabriau. The site is 90 kilometres south of Tours, accessible by car only, approximately 1 hour 15 minutes via the D975. The relative remoteness and exceptional wildlife richness make this a destination in its own right for nature-oriented visitors willing to travel beyond the Loire Valley's central tourist corridor.
