Plage Fluviale du Cher (Saint-Avertin)

The Plage Fluviale du Cher at Saint-Avertin is a municipal freshwater beach on the banks of the Cher River, situated 8 kilometres south of Tours city centre in the Indre-et-Loire département, Centre-Val de Loire. The beach presents a long stretch of close-cut grass leading down to the Cher's gentle current, with a designated buoyed supervised swimming zone that operates throughout July and August. Water quality in this stretch of the Cher is routinely monitored and has historically recorded good bathing results, making it a reliable warm-weather escape for Tours residents. The riverbank is wide and open, oriented to the south and west, catching afternoon sun comfortably. The setting is semi-urban — surrounded by residential Saint-Avertin rather than countryside — but the riverside path, mature tree shade, and the slow-flowing Cher give it a relaxed, pastoral character. The Cher flows slowly at this point, reducing concerns about strong currents during the supervised season. Amenities include grass areas suitable for ball games and picnics, seasonal toilet facilities, on-site parking, and a café-bar that opens through the summer season. The atmosphere is predominantly local and family-oriented, popular with parents bringing children for afternoon dips rather than destination tourists. Access by car is straightforward, with a 10-minute drive from Tours via the D943 and parking at the site. Bus Fil Bleu Line 16 from Tours city centre also serves Saint-Avertin, making this one of the more transit-accessible river beaches in the region. No equipment hire is available on site, but the flat grassy banks and shallow supervised zone are well-suited to families with young children, including toddlers. The Cher riverbank path can be extended into a pleasant riverside walk both upstream and downstream from the bathing area.
