Plage de Pen Hat

Plage de Pen Hat stretches for roughly 600 metres on the southern flank of the Crozon Peninsula in Finistère, one of Brittany's most dramatically scenic Atlantic coastlines. The beach faces southwest into the open ocean, delivering full exposure to Atlantic swell that makes Pen Hat a draw for experienced bodysurfers and those who appreciate wild, unsupervised beaches. The sand is coarse and pale, backed by rolling dunes and open heathland, and the beach is framed to the south by a spectacular series of sea stacks known as the Tas de Pois — a cluster of pointed granite pillars rising from the ocean that features in many of the most celebrated photographs of the Finistère coast. The beach has no lifeguard cover, no commercial facilities of any kind, and only basic parking near the viewpoint above the dunes. This absence of infrastructure is central to Pen Hat's character: the beach draws hikers on the GR34 coastal route, photographers seeking the rock-stack panorama, and surfers looking for an uncrowded Atlantic break away from the managed surf beaches further east. Wild camping is forbidden in this protected coastal zone. The nearest services — café, fuel, pharmacy — are in Crozon town, 8 km away. The Crozon Peninsula sits within the Parc Naturel Régional d'Armorique and this section of coastline is subject to strong tidal currents; swimming is not recommended except on calm days at neap tides. The walk from the cliff-top car park to the beach takes around five minutes over an uneven path.
