Stand-Up Paddleboarding (Gulf of Morbihan)

Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) on the Gulf of Morbihan, on the southern coast of Brittany, France, offers one of the most scenically rewarding flatwater paddle experiences in western Europe. The Gulf is a vast enclosed natural harbour extending approximately 115 square kilometres, sheltered from open Atlantic swell by a narrow entrance channel between Locmariaquer and Port-Navalo. Its calm interior waters, warm summer temperatures, and island-studded scenery make it an ideal location for beginner and intermediate paddlers alike. The Club Nautique d'Arradon (cna-arradon.fr), based at Arradon on the northern Gulf shore, offers SUP board hire and instructed introductory sessions. Vannes Presqu'île SUP (+33 6 83 17 41 09) provides guided two-hour tours of the Gulf, navigating between the islands and salt marshes of the inner harbour. Both operators provide life jackets, paddles, and a briefing on board handling, falling safely, and tidal awareness before launch. No prior paddling experience is required for guided tours. The Gulf's tidal range reaches approximately 4.5 metres at spring tide, and current speeds increase significantly near the outer entrance channel. Guided tours are timed to use slack water and light tidal currents, enabling novice paddlers to cover meaningful distances without fighting the tide. Self-guided hire is better suited to those with some prior SUP or flatwater paddling experience who understand tidal hazards. Water temperatures inside the Gulf reach 20–22°C in summer — among the warmest in Brittany — making short swims comfortable. Wide, stable all-round SUP boards at 10'6" or larger are recommended for beginners; narrower touring boards are available for experienced paddlers. Sessions typically run one to four hours; the inner Gulf has numerous accessible landing beaches. The Gulf is a Natura 2000 protected zone supporting large resident populations of egrets, cormorants, grey herons, and wading birds. Silent paddle craft allow closer approaches to wildlife than motorised vessels. A waterproof bag for valuables, sunscreen, and a waterproof hat are recommended items for summer sessions. Wind strength above force 3 (12–19 km/h) can make SUP challenging for beginners on more exposed sections of the Gulf; checking a local forecast before launching is advised.
