Sea Kayaking in the Gulf of Morbihan

The Gulf of Morbihan is a vast natural harbour covering approximately 115 square kilometres on the southern coast of Brittany, France, enclosed from the open Atlantic by a narrow channel between Locmariaquer and Port-Navalo. Its sheltered interior produces calm, tidal water conditions on most days, making it one of the safest and most scenically rich sea kayaking environments in western Europe. The Breton name Morbihan translates literally as 'little sea', and paddling its waters reveals a landscape of some 40 islands, prehistoric standing stones, heather-lined shores, and abundant coastal birdlife including egrets, cormorants, and migrating waders. The primary guided kayak operator is Au Gré des Vents, based at Port du Logeo in Arzon on the southern tip of the Rhuys Peninsula. The company offers both self-guided kayak hire and half-day or full-day guided excursions navigating between the major islands — including Île aux Moines (the largest) and Île d'Arz — with opportunities for swimming and wildlife spotting en route. Aqua Tonic Aventure at Arradon operates from the northern shore and provides an alternative base for similar hire and tour options. Both operators hold state-certified kayak instructor qualifications (BPJEPS or equivalent) and are fully insured. Tidal currents in the Gulf reach up to 8 knots at the western entrance channel; guided tours are timed to use the tidal flow rather than fight it. Before launching, a safety briefing covers capsize recovery, mandatory life jacket use, and VHF channel monitoring. A rescue tow rope and first aid kit are carried by guides on all sessions. No prior paddling experience is required for guided tours on calm water. Double kayaks are available for families or mixed-ability pairs. The Gulf is a Natura 2000 designated site, and the islands are rich in neolithic monuments: the dolmen of Er-Lannic sits partly submerged at low tide on a small islet visible from the water, and the carved passage tomb on Gavrinis island can be visited by ferry, with operators able to time departures to coincide. Water temperatures reach 20–22°C at the height of summer, among the warmest in Brittany. Paddlers should bring a dry bag for cameras and phones, a waterproof hat, and sunscreen. The Gulf's relatively calm water makes it an outstanding photographic platform for both wildlife and the medieval stone towers and churches lining its shore.
