Annecy and Lac d'Annecy from Lyon

Annecy lies 140 kilometres east of Lyon in the Haute-Savoie department, connected by a direct TER train that runs in under two hours from Lyon Part-Dieu. Known informally as the Venice of the Alps, the town centres on a network of 16th-century canals fed by the crystal-clear waters of Lac d'Annecy, one of the cleanest natural lakes in Europe thanks to strict environmental protections in place since the 1960s.

The old town (Vieille Ville) is compact and walkable from the train station in fifteen minutes. Key sights include the Palais de l'Isle — a 12th-century fortified prison built on an island in the Canal du Thiou — the Château d'Annecy on the hillside above the canal quarter, and the flower-lined Canal du Thiou itself, which flows from the lake through the medieval quarter. The lakefront Jardins de l'Europe and Champ de Mars provide shaded walking and cycling paths stretching three kilometres southward toward Annecy-le-Vieux.

For a half-day on the water, lake cruises depart from the quays of the Compagnie des Bateaux du Lac d'Annecy with round trips taking 75 minutes and costing approximately €14 per adult. Pedalo and kayak hire is available from Plage d'Albigny and Plage Impérial between May and September. Swimmers find the water warm from late June through early September, with lake temperatures reaching 22–24°C in July and August.

Lunch in Annecy suits casual dining along the Rue Sainte-Claire arcade market; traditional Savoyard restaurants serve tartiflette, fondue, and freshwater fish (féra and omble chevalier caught in the lake). The covered market at Rue Sainte-Claire runs Tuesday to Sunday mornings. The afternoon is well spent cycling the flat lakeside path to Talloires (14 km, bike hire from Vélonecy near the station, approx €12–15 for a half-day) or visiting the Château d'Annecy, which houses the Musée Régional d'Annecy for €6 entry.
