The Tallinn TV Tower (Teletorn) rises 314 metres above the forested Pirita district at Kloostrimetsa tee 58a, in Harju County, Estonia. Completed in 1980 for the Moscow Olympic sailing regatta held in Tallinn, it is the tallest structure in Estonia and was reopened to the public in 2012 after a major renovation. A high-speed lift carries visitors to the observation deck at about 170 metres in under a minute. From the platform, on clear days the panorama reaches across Tallinn, the old town spires, the Gulf of Finland and sometimes as far as Helsinki on the horizon. A glass floor section lets visitors look straight down the tower shaft, and a short permanent exhibition covers the tower's history, the 1991 events when it was a focal point of Estonian independence, and the technology of broadcasting. A cafe and a restaurant operate on the upper level, and for the brave a harness-secured outdoor walk, the Edge Walk, is offered on the exterior of the platform at an extra fee. Visits normally take between one and a half and two hours with the exhibition and a cafe stop. Because the tower sits well outside the centre, in the Lasnamäe-Pirita direction, a visit usually involves a bus ride of about 25 minutes from the city. Crowds are lighter on weekdays and in the early morning, while sunny weekends can be busy. The best photo angles are from the observation deck facing west toward the old town and the sea. Clear weather matters a great deal here: on foggy or overcast days the view is limited, and visitors are advised to check conditions before going. The nearby forest paths and the Pirita Convent ruins make a natural pairing.
