Tallinn Old Town, centred on Raekoja plats (Town Hall Square) in Harju County, Estonia, is one of the best-preserved medieval city centres in northern Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The square has been the commercial and civic heart of the Lower Town since the 11th century, and it is ringed by merchant houses with stepped gables, cafes with outdoor terraces, and the Gothic Town Hall, the only surviving Gothic town hall in Northern Europe.

Its slender tower is topped by the weathervane figure of Old Thomas (Vana Toomas), a local emblem since 1530. Visitors spend most of their time simply walking: cobbled lanes such as Viru, Vene, Pikk and Katariina käik lead past guild halls, the Holy Spirit Church with its painted clock, the Town Hall Pharmacy (one of the oldest continuously operating pharmacies in Europe), and sections of the 13th-to-16th-century town wall with more than 20 surviving towers. The Upper Town on Toompea is reached by the steep Pikk jalg, and the viewing platforms at Kohtuotsa and Patkuli offer the classic red-roof panoramas over the Lower Town and the Baltic. A thorough visit takes three to five hours, longer if museums, a meal and the Town Hall tower climb are included. The best photo angles are from the Kohtuotsa platform, from the corner of Raekoja plats facing the Town Hall, and along Viru street toward the Viru Gate towers. Crowds peak between roughly 10:00 and 17:00 in summer, when cruise ships and day-trippers fill the square; early morning and late evening are far calmer, and the Christmas market in December turns the square into a busy seasonal draw. The old town is largely pedestrian, and cobblestones are uneven, so comfortable shoes matter. Restaurants and shops generally keep hours of about 10:00 to 22:00, while the streets themselves remain open around the clock.
