Rummu Quarry (Rummu karjäär) lies near Vasalemma in Lääne-Harju Parish, Harju County, Estonia, about 45 minutes west of Tallinn by car. The limestone quarry was worked from the 1930s and for decades relied on convict labour from the adjoining Murru prison, which closed in 2006. When the pumps were switched off in the 1990s and 2000s, groundwater slowly flooded the quarry, creating a striking turquoise lake that partly submerged the former prison buildings and industrial structures. Today the area is one of Estonia's most photographed sights. The flooded ruins can be seen rising from the water, and the surrounding limestone cliffs and a large artificial hill of spoil add a surreal landscape. Visitors can swim in the lake in summer, rent paddleboards and kayaks, walk on the paths, or take part in diving to the submerged buildings with a local dive operator. A small prison museum on the site covers the history of the facility and daily life inside. In winter the lake freezes and becomes a venue for ice-walking, skating and ice-diving. A visit takes two to four hours, longer if swimming and picnicking. The best photo angles are from the cliff edge and the sand hill above the lake, especially early in the morning or at golden hour when the water colour is most vivid. Crowds are heaviest on warm summer weekends, so weekday mornings are calmer. Entry carries a fee of around EUR 8, with a combined ticket for the prison museum, and hours run daily from about 10:00 to 20:00. A car is the easiest way to arrive, although buses from Tallinn bus station run to Vasalemma and a taxi can cover the last stretch.
