Emerald Pool

1-2 hours Adult: $5 · Child: $2

A pristine waterfall and emerald-green pool in the heart of the Morne Trois Pitons National Park rainforest, accessible via an easy 15-minute walk through lush tropical vegetation. The pool is fed by a 40-foot waterfall and surrounded by ferns, wild orchids, and towering trees.

Emerald Pool is one of Dominica's most photogenic natural sites and the most accessible waterfall destination within Morne Trois Pitons National Park, located near Castle Bruce on the island's central-east side. A well-marked loop trail of approximately 400 metres begins at the park visitor centre car park and winds through lush tropical rainforest, descending gently past towering tree ferns, wild heliconia, and dense stands of bamboo before arriving at the pool. The journey on foot takes around 15 minutes at a leisurely pace. The pool itself is fed by a 12-metre waterfall that drops over a smooth basalt cliff face into a circular basin of strikingly clear water with a green hue created by the algae and rainforest canopy above. The water is refreshingly cool and the pool is shallow enough for wading and swimming — typical depth at the centre is around 1.5 metres. A viewing platform on the opposite side of the pool offers the classic photograph angle: waterfall framed by a curtain of ferns and tropical leaves. A secondary trail branches off and descends to the base of the falls for a close-up perspective. The loop continues back to the car park on a different path, taking visitors through a short tunnel-like section of overhanging vegetation. The site is part of Morne Trois Pitons National Park and the standard park fee of USD 5 (adults) / USD 2 (children) applies, collected at the trailhead. Emerald Pool is included in many guided island tours and is heavily visited when cruise ships are docked in Roseau, typically between 9 AM and 2 PM. Visit before 9 AM or after 3 PM for a more peaceful experience. Total visit time is 1 to 1.5 hours.

FAQ

How difficult is the trail to Emerald Pool?

The trail is easy — a 400-metre loop with gentle descent and ascent on a well-maintained path. It takes about 15 minutes each way and is suitable for all fitness levels including older visitors and young children.

Can visitors swim in Emerald Pool?

Yes, swimming is permitted and popular. The pool is approximately 1.5 metres deep at centre. Water shoes or sandals with grip are recommended as the rocks at the water's edge can be slippery.

Is the site crowded?

Emerald Pool can become very busy when cruise ships are in port, typically between 9 AM and 2 PM. Visiting before 9 AM or after 3 PM significantly reduces crowds.

Accessibility

The trail is not wheelchair accessible due to uneven terrain, steps, and a descent to the pool. However, the path is short and manageable for visitors with moderate fitness. The viewing platform near the pool is reachable by most visitors who can navigate the trail.

When to visit

Late morning (around 10–11 AM) provides the best natural light through the forest canopy onto the pool. To avoid cruise ship crowds, arrive before 9 AM or after 3 PM. The pool is beautiful year-round but most vibrant in the green season (June to October) when rainfall keeps vegetation lush.
