Kykkos Monastery is the richest and most visited monastery in Cyprus, set in the forested Troodos Mountains about 105 km from Paphos. The drive takes around two hours on winding mountain roads, and there is no practical public transport, so visitors use a rental car or a full-day tour from Paphos. The monastery was founded in the Byzantine period and houses an icon of the Virgin Mary traditionally attributed to Saint Luke, which is kept covered in a silver shrine and is not shown openly. The interior courtyards are decorated with gilded mosaics and wall paintings in the Byzantine style, and the Holy Monastery of Kykkos Museum displays icons, manuscripts, vestments and religious treasures. The monastery is also associated with Archbishop Makarios III, the first president of Cyprus, whose tomb lies on a hilltop a few kilometres away near Throni. Visitors should dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, as it is an active religious site. A suggested day leaves Paphos early, around 8:00, to reach the monastery by mid-morning, spends one to two hours between the church and the museum, and then has lunch in a nearby mountain village or at a taverna close to the monastery. In the afternoon, visitors can take a forest walk or drive to Makarios's tomb for views over the Troodos before returning. The best season is April to November; winter can bring cold weather and occasionally snow at altitude, and the mountain air is noticeably cooler than on the coast even in summer. Food stops are limited near the monastery itself, so visitors often combine the trip with one of the Troodos villages or carry a picnic. Fuel up before leaving and check museum opening hours and any entrance fee in advance. The route can also be combined with Omodos, though that makes for a very long day.
