The Akamas Peninsula is the wild north-western tip of Cyprus, about 55 km from Paphos and roughly 55 minutes by car. Public transport does not reach the Baths of Aphrodite (Loutra tis Afroditis), so a rental car, a taxi or a jeep safari is the practical way to travel. The peninsula is a protected area of scrub, gorges and unspoilt coast, and much of it is reached only by rough tracks, which is why many visitors join a jeep tour rather than driving off-road in a standard rental. The best-known stop is the Baths of Aphrodite, a small natural pool shaded by a fig tree, linked in local tradition with the goddess Aphrodite. From the car park near the site, a waymarked circular walk, the Aphrodite Trail, climbs along the coast and returns in a few hours. A shorter option is simply to see the grotto and walk a stretch of the coastal path. Further west, Lara Bay is a protected nesting beach for green and loggerhead turtles, and access is regulated during the nesting season. A sensible day starts early: leave Paphos by 8:30 to reach the Baths of Aphrodite before the heat and the tour coaches, walk the trail in the morning, then spend the afternoon at a beach or on a boat or jeep excursion before driving back. Spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October) give the most comfortable walking temperatures and the greenest scenery; midsummer is hot and shade is limited. Food and rest stops are few inside the reserve. A small café operates near the Baths of Aphrodite car park, but visitors should carry water, sun protection and snacks. Polis Chrysochous and the nearby Latchi harbour, both a short drive away, have tavernas serving grilled fish, halloumi and meze, and are the natural place for lunch. Sturdy shoes are important because the paths are uneven and rocky. Visitors who plan to drive onto unpaved Akamas tracks should check the rental agreement, since many contracts exclude off-road driving.
