Compact medieval Hospitaller fortress west of Limassol.
Kolossi Castle is a medieval fortress about 14 km west of Limassol, near the village of Kolossi on the road toward Episkopi and Kourion. It was a stronghold of the Knights Hospitaller and later of the Order of St John, and it is known for its tall keep, with rooms on three levels. The castle is compact, so a visit takes about 45 minutes to an hour, and it pairs naturally with Kourion, 10 minutes further west. Entrance is charged separately on organised tours, so a small fee applies; the amount and opening hours should be confirmed with the Department of Antiquities before travelling. The surrounding area was famous for the sweet wine known as Commandaria, which is still made in the villages of the hills above. Getting there is simplest by car or taxi, and some half-day tours include Kolossi with Kourion. The castle has stairs and low doorways, and it is best visited in the morning or late afternoon.
