Salt lake with winter flamingos beside the long Lady's Mile beach.
The Akrotiri peninsula south-west of Limassol is a nature area built around the Akrotiri Salt Lake and the long beach known as Lady's Mile. Visit Cyprus notes that the Salt Lake lies about 1.5 km from the shore. In winter, from roughly November to March, flamingos and other waterbirds gather on the lake, while in summer the lake dries to a white crust. The area is about 12 km from Limassol and takes around 20 to 25 minutes to reach by car. Part of the peninsula is within the British Sovereign Base Area, so visitors should stay on public roads and follow signs. The area has little shade or water, so supplies must be brought. A day here combines a birdwatching stop at the lake with a swim and a taverna lunch at Lady's Mile. Public transport is limited.
