Coastal ruins of one of the ancient kingdoms of Cyprus.
Amathus was one of the ancient city-kingdoms of Cyprus, and its ruins lie on the coast about 11 km east of Limassol, in Agios Tychonas. The site covers an acropolis, an agora, baths and early Christian basilica remains beside the sea, and a short visit of about 1 to 1.5 hours is enough. The location makes it easy to reach on a local bus or taxi from the Limassol seafront, and the Parklane resort is about 3 km away. Admission and hours should be confirmed with the Department of Antiquities, as published details differ. There is little shade on the site, so a hat and water are needed in summer, and the walk between the acropolis and the lower area involves uneven ground. It combines well with a swim on the nearby beaches or lunch in the seafront cafes of Agios Tychonas. Early morning gives softer light and avoids the heat.
