Laguna del Cacique Guatavita Circuit

The Laguna del Cacique Guatavita Circuit is a guided interpretive walk around the crater rim of the lake that gave rise to the El Dorado legend, in the Reserva Forestal Protectora Laguna del Cacique Guatavita, vereda Tierra Negra, Sesquile, Cundinamarca, Colombia. The reserve lies about 75 km north of Bogota and is managed by the CAR regional authority. Visits are possible only with a reserve guide: groups leave the gate every 15 to 20 minutes between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Tuesday to Sunday and on Monday holidays. Swimming and drone flying over the lake are prohibited. Fees are about COP 4,000 for local residents, COP 21,000 for Colombian visitors and COP 28,000 for foreign visitors, cash only.

By public transport, visitors take a bus from Bogota's Portal del Norte to Sesquile and then a shared jeep to the reserve gate; a private car takes about 90 minutes. The circuit covers about 3 km and takes 2 hours, climbing from about 2,900 m to 3,100 m on the crater rim, which makes it easy by trail standards, although the altitude and steps can tire visitors who have just arrived from sea level. The surface is a mix of stone steps, packed earth and boardwalk. The rim is exposed to sun and wind, with limited shade from dry Andean scrub, so sun protection is important.

The guided route passes several viewpoints over the near-perfect circular lake, and the guides explain Muisca cosmology, the ritual gold offerings made from a raft, and the colonial drainage attempts that notched the crater wall. The natural turn-around is the end of the loop, since the circuit returns to the gate. There is no drinking water on the route beyond what is sold near the entrance, and no huts, so visitors should bring their own water. The reserve has no card payment and no mobile signal, so cash and offline maps are advisable. Visitors should follow the guide's instructions, stay on the marked steps and respect the lake's sacred status.
