Mount Putuo Coastal Cliffs, Fanyin Cave

Fanyin Cave, also called the Sound of Tide Cave, is a narrow sea cave on the eastern coast of Mount Putuo, an island in the Zhoushan archipelago off Zhejiang and one of Chinese Buddhism's four sacred mountains. The cave faces directly east over the open East China Sea, so sunrise light comes straight through the gap at the cave mouth, backlighting spray thrown up when waves strike the rock walls, an effect strongest at high tide when the water surges deep into the narrow chamber. A telephoto lens compresses the wave action and isolates the lit spray against the dark cave walls, while a wider composition from outside the cave can include pilgrims who traditionally visit the site to view the Bodhisattva Guanyin's reflection in the cave's light. April to June and September to October bring the calmest seas combined with reliable sunrise visibility, avoiding both winter storm swell that can make the site dangerous and summer haze that dulls the sunrise. Because the cave floods with sea spray on any rough day, camera gear needs weather protection regardless of season, and footing on the wet rock approach can be slick. The site sits within the ticketed Mount Putuo scenic area and requires a separate small entry fee at Fanyin Cave itself; tripods are permitted on the viewing platform, though space is limited and shared with pilgrims. Drone flight is prohibited across the island as a religious site.
