Nanxun Ancient Town Canals

Nanxun Ancient Town sits in Nanxun District, Huzhou, Zhejiang, a canal town built on the wealth of Qing-dynasty silk merchants, distinguished by the Baijian Building, or Hundred-Bay House, a long row of waterside residences with a continuous covered arcade facing the canal. The strongest composition looks along the canal at the Baijian Building's repeating white-walled bays and dark wooden pillars, using their reflection in the water as a mirrored lower half of the frame. Early morning light, low and raking along the building's facade, picks out the texture of the aged wood and whitewash, while blue hour after sunset brings warm lantern light along the arcade against a cooling sky, both producing stronger results than the flat light of midday. Spring and autumn offer the clearest canal water and the most comfortable walking temperatures for an extended session along the waterfront. Nanxun is less visited than Wuzhen or Xitang, so even midday hours are comparatively calm, though early morning and blue hour still give the emptiest frames and the best water clarity before boat traffic stirs sediment. The scenic area requires a paid entrance ticket. Tripods are permitted along the public canal-side paths; drone flight is restricted within the historic core.
