Shaoxing Ancient City and Lu Xun's Former Residence

Shaoxing's old town, centered on Lu Xun Road in Yuecheng District, preserves a canal-crossed street grid associated with the writer Lu Xun, whose family compound, former residence, and the adjoining Sanwei Study where he was schooled are all open to visitors within a short walk of each other. Visitors typically start at Lu Xun's Former Residence, a Qing-dynasty family compound with courtyards, a garden, and the rooms described in his semi-autobiographical stories, before continuing to the nearby Xianheng Tavern, a recreated version of the wine shop that appears in his fiction and still serves the local yellow rice wine and dishes referenced in his writing. Beyond the Lu Xun sites, the surrounding streets retain black-tiled canal-front houses, stone bridges, and the small boats that still ply Shaoxing's waterways, giving the district a lived-in character distinct from more heavily commercialized water towns elsewhere in Zhejiang. A visit of three to four hours covers the main Lu Xun memorial sites and a walk through the surrounding canal streets; visitors with more time can continue to the nearby Shen Garden or Cangqiao Historic Street. Weekday mornings before tour groups arrive from Hangzhou or Shanghai give the quietest experience of the narrow lanes. Because much of the district remains residential rather than purely a tourist zone, local life continues alongside the historic sites, including small shops selling the region's fermented tofu and yellow wine.
