Six Harmonies Pagoda (Liuhe Pagoda)

The Six Harmonies Pagoda, or Liuhe Pagoda, stands on Zhijiang Road on the north bank of the Qiantang River in Hangzhou, originally built in 970 CE to help calm the river's notoriously powerful tidal bore and rebuilt in its current form during the Southern Song dynasty. The pagoda's exterior shows 13 stories of ornate wooden eaves, while the interior brick core rises only seven levels, a design detail visitors often notice once inside; climbing the narrow interior staircase leads to balconies at each level with progressively wider views over the river and the modern Qiantang River bridges nearby. Surrounding the pagoda, the scenic grounds include a small collection of miniature pagoda replicas from famous towers across China, arranged in a garden setting that most visitors pass through before or after climbing the tower itself. A full visit, including the grounds and the climb, takes about one to one and a half hours. Because the pagoda sits above the river rather than beside West Lake, it draws noticeably fewer visitors than Hangzhou's lake-side sites, making it one of the calmer landmark visits in the city even on weekends. Late afternoon light on the river and the pagoda's eaves is the best time for photography, particularly from the upper balconies looking downstream toward the bridges. The site is also historically associated with viewing the Qiantang River's famous tidal bore, though the best bore-viewing points are downstream near Yanguan rather than at the pagoda itself.
