Anji Bamboo Sea (Da Zhu Hai)

Anji Bamboo Sea, known locally as Da Zhu Hai, is a dense moso-bamboo forest reserve in Anji County, Huzhou, whose rolling green hillsides were used as filming locations for wire-fu fight scenes in 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,' and the site still markets itself around that cinematic association. Visitors follow a network of raised wooden boardwalks and stone paths that wind up through the bamboo groves to a summit viewing platform overlooking an unbroken sea of bamboo canopy stretching across the surrounding hills, the vista that gives the site its name. A cable car and a bobsled-style slide offer alternative ways up and down parts of the mountain for visitors who prefer not to walk the full route, alongside the standard hiking trails. Along the way, smaller attractions include bamboo-themed craft demonstrations and rest pavilions built from local bamboo. A half-day visit covers the main summit hike or cable car ascent and the descent, with time for photographs at the main overlook platforms. Spring and early autumn bring the most comfortable hiking temperatures, since summer heat and humidity can make the uphill sections strenuous, and the bamboo forest offers little shade relief on the more exposed viewing platforms. The site draws heavier crowds on weekends and during Chinese holiday periods, when the boardwalks and cable car queues lengthen considerably; weekday visits move much faster.
