Xixi National Wetland Park

Xixi National Wetland Park sits on the western edge of Hangzhou, Zhejiang, a sprawling network of ponds, reed marshes and narrow waterways that once formed a working landscape of fish farms and mulberry groves. Visitors move through the park mainly by hand-poled bamboo boat or small electric ferry, drifting along channels lined with reeds, persimmon trees and wooden fishing shacks, with walking paths and boardwalks connecting the three main zones: Fuyi, Hongyuan and Yuanshan. The Fuyi area preserves traditional Jiangnan-style warehouses and a wetland culture museum explaining the site's history as a water-based farming community; Hongyuan centers on open lawns, plum-blossom orchards and bird-watching platforms; Yuanshan is the quietest, with denser reed beds favored by herons and egrets. A single zone can be covered in three to four hours, while seeing all three in one day means an early start and minimal stops. Mornings are calmest, before tour groups arrive from central Hangzhou around mid-morning, and the light on the water is best in the first two hours after opening. Photographers favor the reed-lined channels near Yuanshan and the arched bridges around Hongyuan for reflections. Crowds peak on weekends, national holidays and during the February plum-blossom season at Zhang's Family Land, when the paths and boat docks near the main entrances become congested; weekday visits, especially outside spring and autumn festivals, are noticeably quieter.
