Shaxi Ancient Town and Shibaoshan Mountain
Shaxi is the best-preserved Tea Horse Road market town in China, with a functioning Sideng Market Square, Taoist temple, and ancient theater. Combine with Shibaoshan (Stone Treasure Mountain) — a series of Tang Dynasty Buddhist grottoes carved into cliff faces, containing remarkable 9th-11th century sculptures rivaling those of Dunhuang.

Yuanyang Rice Terraces (from Kunming)

Balagezong National Park (from Shangri-La)

Jianshui Ancient Town (from Kunming)
One of Yunnan's best-preserved historical cities with a city wall gate resembling Beijing's Tiananmen, the largest Confucian Temple outside Beijing, Ming and Qing Dynasty compounds, and the spectacular 17-arch Twin Dragon Bridge at sunset. Less touristy than Lijiang or Dali with a genuinely lived-in ancient city atmosphere.
